Day 20: View from the Studio

Day 20: View from the Studio

I love the view from my studio, especially in the afternoon light that falls across the trees and lights up this building you see a peek of in the right hand corner.

I have done a big charcoal drawing of this view and have wanted to paint it, but have not yet because of other projects with impending deadlines.

I am in love with the light of Rome and capturing it’s strong contrast is one of the most exciting things for me in these past few years of painting. The way I thought to best be able to give that effect or a sense of the beautiful light was by making the interior very dark to contrast with the light through the window.

Probably the easiest and most exciting way to create a POW effect with light and shadow is to put very light lights next to the darkest darks, which is what I attempted to do here. What I have learned is even if I don’t literally see things this dark or light, that sometimes in painting to get the effect you want you gotta go just a tad overboard. Maybe more than a tad would be more exciting!

I did not know if this would work out as a watercolor, painting things through the grid of the windows was a little bit complicated, but if I focused on what was on the other side of the window I could follow and not get lost in the maze of window crosses.

We don’t always get such great views where we work, so I count myself very lucky!
