A Sketch A Day for August

A Sketch A Day for August

Usually this time of year, the heart of summer in Italy, is quiet down time and there is a general lull of silence everywhere you go.

This is the time for most people to go on vacation, a much needed time for a little R & R.

To tell the truth artists never really go on vacation, and even when we do we can be annoying to our fellow travellers by wanting to stop and sketch rather than run around and see the sights. (most artists also enjoy long leisurely stints at cafes drinking coffee or wine and just people watching).

This year I’ve decided to keep myself alert and to not fall too deep into the lull, but instead to do something every day and share it with you. And maybe you want to get inspired and do something and share it too!

I thought just the simple commitment of “a sketch a day” is enough for this hot and sleepy time of year, but I also know that once the creative juices get flowing then they don’t always stop there.

So August will be the month of a sketch a day- whether that be a drawing, a watercolor sketch, a gouache painting, an oil painting- the possibilities are open and endless, which is perfect motivation just to create something.

So I will be posting a daily sketch here on the blog for the month of August, which you can receive in your inbox or follow along here or here on social media if you like those mediums.

I have also created a public Facebook group that anyone can join if you want to share or just follow along with the project. You can post anything from scribbles to high quality more finished work, that is up to you. You can scan and upload images or just shoot a photo with your cell phone and upload it directly. No pressure, it is summer after all.

Sounds like a wonderful summer idea Kelly. I will look forward to following your work. And you never know, I might have a go at keeping up! I will be on holiday too in the warm northern hemisphere but not Italy this time. One day we’ll be back. Best wishes, Philippa
