Day 13: Sunset on Alton Road

Day 13: Sunset on Alton Road

Driving home in the rain after work today I was wondering what I would paint this evening, another still life or interior? I would like to do a nocturne, but the rain and wind (along with tornado warnings!) just didn’t seem to permit it this evening. On the road just before turning onto our street, I looked in the rearview mirror and saw this. I turned around and grabbed my little paint box and a panel and set to work, knowing that this was a perfect but fleeting moment. Today’s painting is a little different from the others thus far, it is just a sketch and a moment in time. I didn’t have time to labor over any one part of the painting, but rather the point was to get it all down and FAST! I think I captured the mood of the moment and wouldn’t know how to think about putting in more detail, so I present you with this little sketch of today’s sunset as is.It’s funny, I’ve been driving all around trying to figure out where in central Florida I can paint the sunrise and sunset, seeing as the ocean or Gulf are at least an hour to get to. I got fixated on the idea of painting fast paintings of sunrises in particular this past summer when I went to stay with my friend in Charleston who is also a painter and we would get up before sunrise to go out to one of the islands and paint the sunrise in the marsh. Those were some of my favorite mornings, I mean how often do you get to do that with your friends?! It’s fun going out to paint alone, but with a friend who thinks it’s cool to paint sunrises too, well, that’s just divine. Here’s today’s ode to the Florida sunset, it’s almost always awe inspiring here and definately worth painting. If you would like to buy this painting or any others from the 100 day project, you can view and purchase them directly here on my website www.kellymedford.com/works All paintings cost $100 (+$15 shipping), are 6×8 inches and painted on linen mounted on birch boards. To share this newsletter with someone, they can subscribe to get the daily email at the following link https://kellymedford.com/email-newsletter or follow the project and comment here on the blog website at www.kellymedford.blogspot.com

Kelly… love this one. Mood… mood… and some mood. Your project is wonderful. Keep it going, don’t stop!!!

On a side note, I’ve met another Florentine, Kim Myerson. She said that she knows you. I know so many people who are either there or were there that it makes me wonder why I wasn’t there??? I was, but not as a student.

Keep up the great work. THIS WILL HELP YOU OUT IN WAYS YOU CAN’T IMAGINE!!!
