Day 15: The Big Gun
You heard right, the big gun. That is what this thing is called. I thought it was just an old fashioned fire hose, but instead it is used to water orange groves, shooting water at great distances.Today I got to go painting with a friend, what a luxury. We went painting in the morning and as it reached afternoon the owner of the orange grove arrived, wondering what we were doing there. Assessing that we weren’t “criminals” (his words) we got to stay and finish out the session. This is one problem with painting landscapes in the United States that you just don’t encounter in Europe: private property and lots of fences. Many times I’ve stopped to paint a place but just couldn’t figure out how to get in there to paint it. Other times I’ve jumped fences, easel and all, and just hoped for the best. Really, most people are nice and interested to see someone painting and let me stay. Sometimes I’ve been more worried about big cows than property owners. Either way it adds to the sense of adventure and to my determination to make a painting (especially with the idea that I might only get the one shot). There’s just nothing like having the whole wide lanscape all to yourself, even if it can be overwhelming trying to decide what to put on my little 6×8″ canvas. That’s all for today. I hope that we’ll have another beautiful day tomorrow.
