Day 23: Boat at Clifton Spring

Day 23: Boat at Clifton Spring

This wasn’t suupposed to be today’s painting, but I’m glad it is. It actually started raining toward the end of this painting, so you could say that it has a “quick” finish. I don’t know where the rain came from, it was sunny and clear all day. True to Florida the rain didn’t stay but just briefly passed through.Today’s original painting was at Steve’s place down the road. I was sure where I was going to paint this morning, but as I was driving there this cow pasture with gorgeous old oaks caught my eye. So I turned around and went back. I found this little patch of woods with the light filtering through and it was just what I was looking for. In fact, I’ve seen this scene many times before but haven’t painted it because it just seems too complicated with all that green! This time I was going to go for it.As I was setting up a truck slowed down, and I immediately understood that I really wasn’t supposed to be there. The owner got out to see what I was doing. I’m glad I decided not to jump a fence again today, then I don’t know that he would have been so friendly. But he was friendly and he let me stay to paint. When I was done he happened to be on his way out and so I showed him the painting. He liked it, so he bought it and I feel honored that it will hang together with his mother’s paintings. So, it was afternoon and I still needed to do today’s painting to show you. I thought of this park I love called Clifton Spring and go here all the time looking for a composition, but never found one until today. Today I saw so many that I decided to just keep it simple and do the little boat. Some kids hanging out fishing told me that all the boats in this place actually belong to the same man and they call him the old boat collector. In fact, there were a lot of boats, all different kinds and some jet skiis. I picked this funny inflateable one for the contrast of the white with the few darks in the water. It’s amazing how many endless compositions there are out there to paint, and I start to feel like how will I ever paint them all?! Really, somehow the small simple thing instead of the big vast scene is sometimes more appropriate and hits home or conveys the mood of a place, which seems to go against common sense.I like this little painting, again it was a challenge with all those subtle whites, but really fun to paint and an odd composition, which I find somehow pleasing with that tree in and other boat in the back. So, another exciting day, all from just standing outside with an easel. I’m really loving this, each day is a new adventure.
