Day 26: Single Daisy In a Bottle
I remember reading once that John Singer Sargent said to paint white flowers when you can, as in it’s a good exercise, like the scales of painting if you will. And I think it’s really true. Everything is there in a white flower, the subtlties of light, shadow, half-tone and then drawing issues like foreshortening, indeed a fine exercise working many muscles. If you’ve never sat and observed a flower for let’s say an hour at least, try it sometime, you’ll be surprised at all the changes that take place right before your eyes! I’ve painted white flowers a few times (always a challange!) and the first time I remember thinking either that I was crazy or that I just didn’t know anything about basic drawing. What I mean is that the flower is actually constantly moving, and so if you’re not fast you’ve got to draw and then redraw it. It could be maddening if you didn’t get at first (like me) that this is what is happening. So here is my next attempt at the single daisy in a blue bottle. It’s funny how lately I keep coming back to white. I don’t know what it means, but I’m just attracted by the high contrast created by white. And nothing is more humbling to paint than a single white flower.I hope you enjoy. Frankly I’m recuperating from my trip, I really wasn’t able to sleep on the trip back to Florence, so am quite glad that I painted this one day before. Talk to you tomorrow, and I’ll hopefully be well rested and definately have something new to show you!To buy this painting for $100 (+ shipping), follow this link http://kellyaskey.fineartstudioonline.com/works/408099To view or buy other paintings from the project follow this link www.kellymedford.com/worksYou can pass this project on to a friend by reccomending that they subscribe to the daily enewsletter at http://kellyaskey.fineartstudioonline.com/email-newsletter or they can follow along on the blog website at www.kellymedford.blogspot.comTalk to you tomorrow!
