Day 37: Fountain in Piazza della Libertà
Last year I saw this square in an earlier form (before traffic exsisted..) in a 19th-century painting in an exhibit here in Florence and it looked like a much more enjoyable place with wide gardens and the avenue. Now it is one of the many entrances to the old city, marked with the tower or old door which was part of the gates to the city. This square is maybe not one of the most peaceful in Florence as it is completely encircled by multiple lanes of traffic, but it is still majestic with its triumphal arch (that I felt was a little too overwhelming to squeeze into my little canvas). The word libertà in Italian means both freedom and liberty (they only have one word where we have two) as I discovered when an Italian asked me once what the difference is between these two words. My best on the spot answer was that freedom is inherent and liberties are given to you by the state or government. But now I’m not entirely sure that’s the case every time. Either way, the fact that we do have this disction is distinctly American and a huge part of our culture. What does it have to do with today’s painting? I’m not really sure of that either, except that being an American abroad, one is always comparing and contrasting and wondering if we are really so different..To buy this painting or any other from the 100 day project, click here https://kellymedford.com/collections/25604All paintings are $100 + $15 shipping, are 6×8″, painted on birch and unframed. You can share this project with someone by sending them to the blog at http://www.kellymedford.blogspot.com/ or they can subscribe to receive the daily painting via email at this link here https://kellymedford.com/email-newsletterYou can always contact me directly at kellyaskey@gmail.com, I’d love to hear from you.And really, thanks for reading!
