Day 40: Jessica’s Sewing Room
Today I was grateful for the rain and to Jessica for letting me spend the morning in her beautiful place. As I sat down to paint this, thoughts of the Welsch painter Gwen John came rushing into my head. I haven’t thought about her in years, maybe since college, but today she was everpresent. And while painting this I had the experience of there being something both distinctly feminine and haunting about this interior. Many times there is something haunting about interiors, especially with the objects of a person left behind without them physically being there. This is something I have been thinking about for a long time in painting, and not just with interiors: absence as presence or the power of silence. Even if I am not always successful at communicating this idea, it is there for me many times, especially in the manmade landscape and now with these interior paintings. This project is really cool, if for nothing else for the chance to discover these aspects of myself and my painting that I had no idea about. I would have never guessed to have liked or being able to pull off interior paintings, but now I am intrigued and will pursue some larger canvases with interiors. I’ve always wanted to paint landscapes because I prefer being outside and also because I always thought that I was never any good at drawing, so landscapes would somehow be more managable with my weaker drawing skills. I wonder how many other assumptions I have about myself that keep me from exploring new avenues?Unpredictability is the beauty of this project, as I was also sure that today’s blog would talk about all the cool apartments that are being continually discovered here in Florence, but I think I’ll just save that for another time. Thanks for reading, you really are a good sport- I may just write more than I paint..To buy this painting for $100 (+ $15 shipping) click here https://kellymedford.com/works/414990/jessicas-sewing-roomTo view or buy other paintings from the 100 day project, click here https://kellymedford.com/collections/25604Share this project with a friend!
