Day 90: May Irises
I was out after the early morning rain, and boy do people in North Carolina love their azaleas! They’re in bloom everywhere you turn. Everything is in full bloom really, so I couldn’t resist but paint some flowers today.I never have thought of myself as a “flower painter# (whatever that means..), but I did have to paint them several times while studying still life painting. As I said with the daisy painting earlier in the project, painting flowers (especially white ones) has got to be one of the best exercises for a painter. This painting is unique if nothing else for it singular bizarreness in it’s composition! I didn’t plan this one out, I just sat my easel down and started painting, I was pretty excited by just how gorgeous these flowers are. The iris deserves more than a one shot painting, or at least more than one painting. I could seriously paint these flowers over and over again because of their grace. Think how many paintings I’ve said this about now, that I could do many more paintings of a single day painting, I’ve already got a lifetime’s worth of material for longer and bigger projects. I love the one day paintings, they are making me much more confident about just approaching painting in general. No more being too careful or indecisive, no leaving something I’m unsure of how to treat until next time. Just put it down and see what I think. Arrange and then rearrange, change and keep going. I think that this decisiveness gives me the permission to be bold and try new things constantly. Now that’s exciting. To buy today’s painting for $100, click here.
