Day 65: Cleaning Up
First I just wanted to wish all the Canadian and Americans a very Happy Labor Day today!I hope that you are having a wonderful day of rest and enjoying the last of summer fully.Yesterday I went to the hillside town of Arsoli. This was another beautiful place to hold a painting competition.This town is at the beginning of the Simbruini Mountain range and has been an important source of water for Rome since 600 B.C. It has a small historical center which was really lively yesterday as people came out with their families to eat, drink, listen to music and enjoy the art from the day. Even though it was overcast the entire day and threatening to rain, we got lucky and it held off until it was all over.I just wanted to share my painting from the day with you. Although it did not win a prize, the painting did sell to a doctor from the town who knows the place I painted well.

The abandoned house caused some locals to comment, saying that it was a sad subject and they weren’t sure that it was worthy of painting.I loved this spot however and thought that it represented the mood of the town exactly yesterday. I didn’t find it sad at all. Instead it was a memory of times past that we are lucky enough to still see today. I was overjoyed to know that this painting would remain in this town. I think it belongs here.Now back to daily Rome paintings…Today was a whirlwind of mood here in the city with bright bulging clouds and rumbling thunder. I stayed in the studio to work and finish up some loose ends and to prepare more panels for daily paintings.Amazed by how clean my studio is now after a good cleaning last week, I was happy to dedicate another daily painting to it.

September 4, 2012 at 6:21 amI know Arsoli and I think you picked a fitting subject to paint. It’s not one of the nicer towns in that area, almost forgotten with very wary inhabitants.I love the painting, the light is gorgeous.So happy to know someone recognized your work by purchasing it!

September 5, 2012 at 5:03 amSue and Celia, I had never been to Arsoli, but the town had a decidedly more abandoned feel than Subiaco where I painted a few weeks back.
The light here was special, soft and blue and luckily I had a good 5 hours to paint here since it was overcast. Also having the opportunity to paint a larger canvas afforded me the ability to put in more detail and to work on the composition.
