The Light of Italy, A Day at Santa Severa

The Light of Italy, A Day at Santa Severa

Painted at the seaside of Santa Severa, this is part of the old castle structure. I love this view that looks towards the countryside rather than the sea and gives a small sense of the pastoral beauty of this place.

As soon as I saw this scene with the light and shadows I knew I had to paint it and to paint it fast, the sun was on the move in the late afternoon light.

This lighting was exciting, with a wide range of values from the white of the building to the deep dark shadows under the brush on the left- something I don’t always get to do is to paint the wide range from light to dark.

Instead of painting in so much detail here, I left the suggestion of stone work, the windows and the grass, using the movement of the brushstrokes and working all over the canvas quickly.

More and more I love the light and shadow effect that is so strong under the Italian light, it captures my attention and fascinates me endlessly. This high contrast is distinctly and forever Italy to me and I hope to hone this skill of capturing the Italian light for many years to come.
