Remembering Forgotten Places

Remembering Forgotten Places

I love to paint places- buildings, streets, squares, houses and their surroundings. I also am enamored with the play of light and shadow and buildings are the perfect medium to lend themselves to exploring this infinite subject.

California is vast, in fact the state is about the size of the entire country of Italy. I had the opportunity to explore a small part of it on my recent travels there. Driving down the road I spotted this old train depot painted a bright light green and knew I had to paint it.

Luckily there was a man who volunteers with the association that raises money to maintain this little depot who I was able to chat with and find out a little more about this place. It has the word “Agnew” printed on the white sign and is named after Abram Agnew who was an Ohio pioneer for the South Pacific railroad.

This depot was built in the late 1870s, which is old by U.S. standards. It was so much fun to stand here, especially as the Amtrak train sped by honking.

I love the idea of painting as also a way to document an ever changing landscape and am overjoyed that an image of this painting will be donated to the association so that they can print cards to sell to raise money desperately needed to repair the roof and to keep the depot standing.
