Roman Country Fields

Roman Country Fields

Though this seems like somewhere in the rolling countryside, this is in the city of Rome.

A friend and brilliant mosaic artist let me come over and plant myself on her rooftop terrace all morning.

What a surprising and stunning landscape to be found in the city and it stretches on for a much wider distance than my small canvas with rolling hills back to the mountains.

With the threat of rain it was overcast the entire time while painting this, giving the colors a soft and subtle look. The best part are how blue and purple the hills are when they go back and back.

It’s nice to be reminded of the quality of life out here in the (almost) country.

You really did capture the mood and sky so well with a beautiful pallet of colors.I should think that very hard to do in an overcast scene – to be able to have a lightness without the feeling of darkness or drabness.
