Painting In Rome: A Traveling Artists’ Experience

Painting In Rome: A Traveling Artists’ Experience

Now I’m always going on about how fabulous it is to paint en plein air in Rome, Italy and you believe it, right? Last month U.S. based plein air painter Stephan Gianinni  joined us painting here in Rome.

Talking with Stephan while painting atVilla PamphiliHe was delightfully surprised not only by the rich and varied landscape, but also by the local artist hospitality. Rome has a wonderful Urban Sketchers group where we meet once a month to go out sketching various locations around the city together.

Rome’s Urban Sketchers deep in sketching mode at Portico di OttaviaThat’s how I made my first friends in Rome. Inside of the Rome Urban Sketchers group I was able to meet several painters. Now we’ve formed a little group and we go out painting the streets and parks together.I’m so lucky!

Making painting buddies is important in an otherwise solitary profession. Thanks to the world of social media plein air painters can now travel the globe and have friends and painters to show us the good painting spots wherever we go. The global reach of the Internet not only allows us to connect, but to hopefully form real lasting friendships. You can read Stephan’s original post about his experience living and painting in Rome here
