You’re Never Alone Painting the Streets of Rome
Painting is mostly a solitary sport, except when you’re out on the streets of Italy. Not only do Italians love to chat about anything and everything, they will recount the most wonderful stories about their lives and even the neighborhood where I am painting that day.Via della Vetrina, Looking Towards San Salvatore24×18 cmoil on panel©Kelly Medfordclick here for purchase informationI actually enjoy being with people, I guess I’m not your average stoic type. I even like company while out painting, despite the fact that I don’t chat much since I can’t seem to talk and paint coherently at the same time.Luckily I’ve had even better company recently than the average passerby. American painter Linda Smythe has been joining me out on the streets and thought she could try her hand at the interactive sport of plein air cityscaping while she is in Rome.Linda painting in Via della VetrinaWe were lucky enough to find this back street not too far from Piazza Navona. Not only did it have a gorgeous view of a bell tower in the background, the tourists seemed to miss this street entirely. Both Linda and my easel set up alongside the parked scooters in an otherwise empty streetWith the weather being completely unreliable lately, we were just lucky to get some nice light and shadows for a few hours. This subject was perfect, I could spend a lifetime just painting windows and rooftops in Italy. The contrast of the light and shadow is something I never tire of looking at or painting.Linda with her finished painting, which turned out GREAT!I also can never get enough of painting in the streets of Rome, the variety is endless and the company proves to always be entertaining.Join me for a plein air or sketchbook journaling workshop in Italy.Click here to see all upcoming dates.Thank you for your interest in Adventures in Painting!
