Step-by-Step Oil Sketch

Step-by-Step Oil Sketch

This is one of my favorite places that I’m fascinated with, the roof of my building.Growing up I never had one of these, I never got to go on the roof and here in Rome most rooftops have little buildings like this one on top of them.January on the Roof8×10″Oil on Linen Mounted on Panel©Kelly MedfordSee or purchase this paintingI love this place mostly for the play of light and shadow and today the sky was gorgeous. This painting is a little larger than the daily small paintings because I was photographing the process of how I go about making an oil painting sketch- meaning the basic stages of getting a painting down in one shot while you’ve got the light. This is in preparation for an upcoming workshop I’ll be teaching in Umbria- Art of the Painted Sketch. I’m super excited about this, not only because I love to be out sketching everyday, especially with others, but also because of the location.Arte Umbria is an incredible villa located in the hills and surrounded by forest and olive groves. It has a huge terrace and pool, all the meals are home cooked, you don’t even have to bring any supplies- just show up prepared to eat, drink, relax and paint- now that’s my kind of workshop! You can find out more about it here on my website, including the detailed itinerary of what we will be covering during the week long workshop. I will be leading a step-by-step course on the painted oil sketch and how to capture quickly the light and mood of a place. This is course is my passion and what I do everyday, so having the opportunity to lead others in this will be a joy!Learn more about Arte Umbria herehttp://arteumbria.com/Read all the details or sign up for the workshop here https://kellymedford.com/workshop/6386/the-painted-sketch

Hi Matt and thanks for leaving me a comment so that I can know who you are- narcissistic landscape painter! I love that, it made me laugh out loud on your website, great description for all arists- potentially.

Come and paint in Italy sometime, I’m sure you don’t mind the cold, but the warm light here is tops. Thanks again for your comments.
