Winter’s Fruit

Winter’s Fruit

Rainy, wet and cold. The perfect day to paint something colorful in the studio.I felt the need for another shot at the clementines, I wasn’t done with them just yet. So today found me rearranging them (again) in the studio as the rain poured down.Winter’s Fruit6×8″Oil on Linen mounted on Panel© Kelly MedfordFor me, practice or painting something and then painting it again, seems to be key to having a better understanding of how to go about painting. Don’t do it once and move on, but do it until I think I might see it in my sleep. I once read an article from a professional violinist that always stuck with me about practice. We don’t practice just to get perfect, but to get better or more specifically to deepen our knowledge and understanding of our craft in the hopes of using it to make poetry and to provoke emotion. All of that can be done using colors and some brushes- incredible! In fact I’m convinced that the subject isn’t always the most important thing, it’s how it’s approached. A brushstroke is like a fingerprint, one of a kind and so expressive. A brushstroke says everything about the painter’s state and sets the mood and stage for each painting. Here’s to another day of practice, or rather of clementine poetry! You can see or buy today’s painting here for $120.See all other paintings from the 120 Day Project hereJoin me in painting Italy en plein air!Upcoming workshops include Umbria, Venice and RomeGo here for details and to paint Italy with me:http://kellyaskey.fineartstudioonline.com/workshops
