Artist At Work
Did you ever visit an artist working in their studio? Isn’t it an exciting experience to get a glimpse inside their mind, world and art?Today I took the chance to visit a good friend a brilliant mosaicist Megan Mahan in her studio here in Rome. After asking her a billion questions in an attempt to better understand her work and the multi-faceted world of mosaic making in general, I sat down and did this painting of her working at her bench. The Mosaicist at Work in Her Studio6×8″Oil on Wood© Kelly MedfordI learned so much today about the different techniques of mosaics and from what I gathered they’re all complicated! Megan studied art conservation but fell in love with mosaics by the end of her studies. Today she was working on a gorgeous small piece made from melted and cut pieces of glass, a technique that hardly anyone knows anymore and is called micromosaic. Megan associates it with painting, and in fact she was creating a detail from a Klimt painting, perfectly chosen for its pattern and vibrant colors. Here is a snapshot of her hands at workI highly recommend checking out her work, she is truly a gifted and unique artist. She never ceases to amaze me with each new piece created.See Megan’s website here or check her out here on Facebook. You can see or purchase today’s painting here on the websiteSee other paintings from the 120 Day Project hereUpcoming Workshops:Rome, Venice and Umbria- all in 2013!Click here for more details
