Don’t You Love Surprises?

The soft light of this place peeking into the Roman Forum in the distance made it a great painting spot.Rome is full of views, everywhere you turn could be a painting (if you don’t get run over by a car first!). This composition wasn’t mine though, it was chosen by a couple who commissioned a painting of their street and going there to paint several times I could see why.Morning in Monti8×6″Oil on Panel© Kelly MedfordThis was one of several studies for their commission, in fact it was a surprise! Trying not to get caught by the person it would be gifted to was a challenge.I came to love this place after having returned several times. There was an older couple who owned of one Italy’s famous hardware shops on the corner where I was painting. This is no hardware shop- this is a shop that literally has anything you could ever need or dream up that you need. They even had a gas heater that they tempted me to come in and warm my hands up with every hour or so. I came to grow very fond of them and they suggested I come back soon to do a painting of their shop with all the crazy kitchen gadgets hanging on the street. Great idea. I might wait until spring though. You can see or buy today’s painting here from the website.See all other paintings from the 120 Day Project hereCheck out the daily paintings of 250 other artists taking the daily painting challenge for the month of January hereJoin me in painting Italy. This is lovely. I love your little story too. Yes I think you should return in the Spring. Seems very fitting!

It’s unanimous then- back in the spring to paint the wacky store front! A friend just sent me a photo of it, maybe I should put it on the blog to show you how off-the-wall it really is.

Thanks so much for your fun comments Susan and Claire!
