Day 44: The Odd Man Out

Day 44: The Odd Man Out

While I have been painting everyday, I haven’t always made it back to the studio before dark to photograph the day’s painting. With winter coming and the days growing shorter, painting outdoors feels like a race against the setting sun. I can’t get the paint on fast enough!Lemon in the Garden, Giardino degli Aranci8×6″Oil on Panel© Kelly Medford, 2012I love this park, it’s a magical place and this day was no different. The light has changed lately with the sun being lower in the sky, resulting in a more blue soft feel, the one I associate with winter. There is so much to paint in this place, Rome’s famous orange garden. It gets its name from the plethora of orange trees planted here. Unfortunately the fruits are bitter, so eating them is out of the question. The park is strategically placed on top of Rome’s Aventine hill and overlooks the Tiber River and towards St. Peter’s dome. It is idyllic and ridiculously romantic- it’s common to see couples lingering on the balcony overlooking the city silently enjoying the view.A single lemon tree parked on this pedestal called out to me with that streak of light just touching the corner of the pot, it was beautiful. It wasn’t in fact an orange tree, it was the odd man out.To see today’s painting on the website, click here.See other paintings from the 120 Day Project by clicking here.
