Day 58: The Domes of Florence
Florence is full of Domes. Whether you’re on a narrow street, on a hill or strolling along the river, you often times have a dome in sight. For a long time I thought that the dome you can see everywhere was just The Duomo since it is the main church right smack in the center of town. The dome is so big that to this day still the largest brick and mortar dome in the world. Needless to say it easily overpowers a landscape, especially in a small city like Florence. There are several smaller domes around town and not just the Duomo. One of my favorites is a church that is rarely open to the public and is on the opposite side of the Arno.San Frediano in Cestello, Florence8×6″Oil on Panel© Kelly Medford, 2012The best view to paint this happened to be in the middle of a sidewalk. Luckily Italians are friendly and they didn’t seem to mind. The sky was almost as imposing as the dome and had been threatening to rain all day.Luckily the rain held off and I got the chance to paint this. Painting domes is not something I would normally do, but in Florence it seemed like a must. You can see today’s painting or buy it here from my website. Thanks so much for following the 120 Day Project!
