Day 67: Secret Gardens
This gem of a place is part of the larger Appia Antica Park here in Rome. This part of the park, called La Caffarella, gets its name from the family who owned this huge tract of land in the 16th century. It’s a wonderful place full of treasures, including this community garden. The garden is mostly used to teach children about gardening. This painting is of the little shed and gravity fed water tank used to keep it all going. The Water Shed, Caffarella6×8″Oil on Panel© Kelly Medford, 2012I wanted this to be a quick study and not spend too much time fussing over the details of the painting. The light was moving fast, meaning I had to be fast.I loved the red shed against all of that green, plus the water tank up there. It was such a sweet spot that I had to stay and paint it. Even though the garden was full of vegetables, there was no one there to tend to it this morning. I resisted the urge to have lunch out of the garden and instead pulled a few weeds as my thanks for letting me stay and paint. You can see today’s painting or buy it here for $120 from my website. Thanks for following the 120 Day Project!
