Day 69: Departures
This train station is just a short bus ride away from my house and has just been completely remodeled and expanded. It’s now a modern, open and free-flowing space with such a great play of light that it was difficult to choose where to paint.Tiburtina Station, Rome6×8″Oil on Panel© Kelly Medford, 2012I was going there this morning to see a friend off and thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to stay and paint.I was planning on painting part of the new station but I got really interested in the play of light and shadow on this side (the older part) instead.I love taking the train from here, it’s a world away from Rome’s main train station Termini. Here is much more relaxed and never crowded as you calmly descend on an escalator to meet your train on the platform. I did some sketching here last winter after the station was inaugurated together with Rome’s Urban Sketchers group. The green round hovering units hanging from the ceiling are marvelous and remind me of The Jetsons.
