Day 75: Waiting Patiently

Day 75: Waiting Patiently

How good are you at waiting? If you’re like me, not that good.I’ve been watching these pomegranates grow larger for over 3 months now and they still haven’t begun to turn red. In fact we still have another 2 months of waiting. Meanwhile I get to see them each day in the garden, hanging down low as I walk into the studio.Waiting for Pomegranates8×6″Oil on Panel© Kelly Medford, 2012Not only do I have to wait to eat these luscious fruits, but I had to wait for just the right moment to paint them. The light comes into the garden, filtering through just after noon time. I got my easel and set up before the light was right and started mixing up some greens on my palette.I never premix colors on my palette (don’t tell!), but I was nervous that the moment of the beautiful light would come and go and I would be unprepared. I’m really glad I did this because just as I had predicted, I had a really narrow window to paint this.I also chose to paint this because I knew it would be really difficult. This is the kind of subject I look at and love, making little cooing sounds and saying something to myself like, “gorgeous”! but then avoid painting because it just seems too hard. I think in advance that I would never do this scene justice. One thing that I have learned doing from painting day in and day out is not to think too much and just start. Do something even if I don’t know how, even if I think that it won’t come out. Do it enough and I’ll start to see something emerge and to close the gap between where I am and where I want to be.Now isn’t that the whole point? You can see today’s painting or purchase it here from my website:http://kellyaskey.fineartstudioonline.com/works/957486/waiting-for-pomegranatesThanks so much for following the 120 Day Project!
