Day 114: A Day to Breathe

Day 114: A Day to Breathe

This will be my last painting from Tuscany for a bit and I’m feeling a little nostalgic about it.It’s been almost 2 years since I moved to Rome and switched palette and landscape, so to go back was to see these old familiar places through new eyes.Evening Coming on the Path, Le Caldine19×23 cmOil on PanelThis was painted at the end of the day looking uphill through this path. The light is that intensely yellow almost orange warmth before it slips behind the hill to set. What I set out to capture here was a strong contrast with the diagonal shadow cutting across the composition. In the end I didn’t create as much contrast as I would have liked, so I learned that next time not to be shy and to go ahead and pump it up.Still I think that the painting is successful and I like the piece of the house in the corner as hard forms compared with the soft of the path and bushes. This is a kind of light that I have not attempted to paint much in the past and it was exciting, especially since it was fleeting.Today is the self-appointed day of rest and tomorrow it’s back to hitting the streets of Rome.If you like this painting, it can be purchased for $120 here from my website.Thank you for your interest in the 120 Day Project.
