Value in Repetition?
From the Window , 10×8″, oil on panelIf you’ve been following my latest project, you just might feel like you’ve seen me paint this painting before (because you have). With the heavy rain and cold weather I decided to stay in and paint today and I wanted to paint this scene over to see if I could learn something new, especially with the tricky part of painting these white semi-transparent curtains.I don’t know that today’s result is anymore successful than last weeks attempt, but I was not resolved with the first painting and wanted to try again. After the second attempt I still feel like there is more to be developed and explored in this painting. You may just see it again.. who knows?!Any thoughts on repition? Worthwhile or waste of time?

February 28, 2011 at 7:47 pmHi Kelly. I really enjoy seeing what you’re doing, and your work is beautiful! I think your new posting schedule is a good idea, for I’ve also found that some paintings need to be worked on in several sessions. I find this especially true when trying to capture light, for sparkling light just shows up better when you can layer it onto dryer paint. Keep up the good work! Aleex

February 28, 2011 at 11:27 pmHey Kelly, I love the color of this one, the red in front with the green in the back draws my eye through the window. The curtain do have the feel of being semi-transparent. I think repetition has value. It helps us to find new in the familiar.

March 1, 2011 at 10:03 amThank you both Aleex and Eliane for your comments.
Eliane, I never thought about the juxtaposition of the red and green: a good thing to keep in mind and use intentionally in the future.
Aleex, thank you for your thoughts and yes, I think I need to slow down and spend the time that it takes to work a painting to a resolved finish.
Thank you for your input!
