Day 82: View From Overlook Park

Day 82: View From Overlook Park

I really wanted to call this painting Sailor Out at Sea or give it some such title, because it’s exactly how I felt while painting this. The wind was blowing so hard and the waves were crashing up on the dock where I was standing that I somehow felt brave for standing out there painting. It was fun really, and sometimes the brushstrokes weren’t landing exactly where I had intended them to as the easel went back and forth a little with the wind, it was an added excitement for the painting!I just love the Florida landscape, I don’t think that I will ever get used to it. For me it’s almost tropical, but retains this wild primal feel to it with the big oaks and their spanish moss hanging down creating the heaviest shade. And that dark water where you can’t see into it, and so you know there must be an alligator just lurking underneath the surface. You can tell that it’s very dramatic and exciting for me.I must admit that I am a little tired today, but once I got painting I was into it and forgot about being tired. I like traveling and painting completely different landscapes, it doesn’t give me the chance to get too used to any certain look or palette. I realized today that this change is good to keep me thinking about how I am going to approach painting what’s in front of me when it’s not familiar. Hopefully this will make me a better painter, analyzing each situation as unique and it’s own and not allowing me to develop some kind of formula for how you paint something. Florida is full of green and blue, that’s for sure, but it’s also wonderfully unpredictable. To buy today’s painting, click here. To view all other paintings from the project, click here.
