Day 78: Copy After Cabianca: Cipressi al Poggio Imperiale

Day 78: Copy After Cabianca: Cipressi al Poggio Imperiale

I thought that I would try something a little different today to mix it up. This is a copy of a painting done by an Italian impressionist named Cabianca. I’ve copied paintings in the past with varying levels of success, but have always learned huge amounts from this simple act. I chose this painting for its strong light effect and thought that it was one of the less complicated compositions to fit onto a small canvas. In painting this I saw so many things, like how he (Cabianca) put dark darks next to bright lights to get a strong light effect. Even though this is a small and simple painting, it’s incredibly subtle! Several times I tried mixing his colors but just couldn’t figure it out, while other times I could guess easily what he was doing. It’s really cool copying a painting, it’s almost like having a glimpse into the brain of another painter. This is an exercise that I will keep doing regularly, it’s so helpful and gives endless insights into the nuts and bolts of painting. To buy today’s painting, click here.
