Day 44: In Ben’s Studio
Setting up outside today, I just whimped out. The artic wind was howling and I decided to call over to a friend who has a studio nearby to see if I could go and paint there. Sometimes it’s nice to have the company as well: we were a studio full, each working on their seperate projects, and I was happy for it. There is a whole block of these lovely studios built specifically as artists’ studios in Florence and they are fantastic. In my little canvas I didn’t capture the height of the ceilings and 2-story window, but maybe that can be the subject for another painting. I think next winter that I might need a studio, a real one with heat. I know I’m not supposed to say this, but right now I kind of like not having a studio. It makes painting more interesting and way less predictable. All of the sudden the whole world becomes a potential composition and doesn’t have to be arranged with that same “studio” light. I think not having a studio also presents a painter with a whole other set of challenges. It can be tricky being organized enough to drag all of your things with you everywhere you go and to manage to stay clean. Also no one wants to come to visit if you have bags of stinky bottles and paint rags lying around, and your friends don’t always want these things in their house either. (I hang my paint rag bags out the window..)Still, I hope I won’t be forever without a studio, but for now it seems like part of my adventure and it works.Ben has a great studio, even someone who’s not an artist would envy it. I feel lucky to get the chance to share it for a day.To buy this painting for $100 click here. You can see all of the paintings from the 100 day project here.
