Day 34:Michelangelo’s Crouching Boy: Value Study

It’s funny how I was sure that I would be painting scenes of Florence, but since I’ve arrived back in Florence I’ve mostly painted just things with personal meaning. Sure, a lot of that has to do with the fact that it is raining just about every day, but it’s also that in some way I’m realizing that I’m drawn to more intimate personal subject matter. This is a copy of a sculpture attributed to Michelangelo that is in my boyfriends family’s house. His family has the most gorgeous home and a family history of artists. I’m not sure that they would ever agree to let me paint in their living room, but they were gone for the evening so I jumped on my chance to paint this. I didn’t want to do a highly rendered finished painting: there is something about the feeling of this sculpture that lends itself to an impression, which is what this painting is.Of course, how could one be in Florence and not reference Michelangelo in some way? Impossible! This is not really the sculpture that we think about when we think Michelangelo and/or Florence, but it is as worthy as any in my book. And just taking the time to attempt to paint it shows me the huge difference between his drawing skills and mine! What would an artist be without the constant gap to fill between where we are now and where we want to be or with nothing that we wanted to do better or try to figure out in more depth? Isn’t it just amazing that a person can make their whole life be about curiosity, experimenting and expression?!To buy this painting for $100 + shipping, click here http://kellyaskey.fineartstudioonline.com/works/412086You can view or buy other paintings from the 100 day painting project buy clicking on this link https://kellymedford.com/works https://kellymedford.com/collections/25604All paintings are 6×8″, painted on birch and unframed. You can share this project with someone by having them sign up to receive the daily email here https://kellymedford.com/email-newsletter or they can follow the project on the blog at www.kellymedford.blogspot.comThanks for reading and sharing and for all of your awesome happy birthday wishes yesterday!
